Blogging fro NETS

No, we're not talking about fishing.  I wouldn't mind but we're talking about the National Educational Technology Standards.  There are six of them that we should be working towards:

  • Creativity & Innovation
  • Technology Operations
  • Digital Citizenship
  • Critical Thinking
  • Research & Information
  • Communication & Collaboration
When I look at this list I see things that we should be working on in all of our learning/teaching but this is about blogging.  Here's my question:  Which of these are we not doing when we use blogs in the classroom?  I suppose if I only have my students throw up a picture and not respond they're only working toward one or two of the standards but if we're taking full advantage of blogging they're doing them all.  Of course the same thing could be said for many of the tools and structures we use.  How often have we not taken full advantage of the library?

If you've read my other posts, there's not that many, you know that I'm new to all of this.  You also know that I'm really big on communication and collaboration.  I planning on focusing my classroom blogging on that standard.  I'm still figuring a lot of stuff out but I have found that my own learning is moving toward all of these standards because of what I'm doing with blogging.  The trick with my students will be to get them to fully engage in blogging as a learning tool not just an entertainment medium.

Picture Time:
What happens when you ask a student to photograph nothing?
This is from an independent study student who is doing some very cool stuff.
